The One

My lunch time errand companion is usually John Hockenberry from the Take Away on NPR and today he shared a few bitter, and some sweet, love stories. The program had a few  clips of people talking about how they let someone go years ago who they now realize was the one. John ended the segment by asking, "Do you wonder if someone was the one or are you with the one?". My immediate response was "I am with the one!"

We lived exactly 11 miles apart. Both trying to shake from our minds the hazardous memories of previous love-hate relationships. A very perceptive neighbor of Mitch's, and coincidentally my internship director, made a timely connection that led to numbers being exchanged. My instantaneous Facebook stalking led to a premature write off -  “This red blooded Utah fan who's obsessed with baseball and wants to study law cannot be the one”.

Two lessons I had to learn about "The One" in order to make the right decision.

No, Mitch wasn't the frugal-spending, Disney-loving, cougar fanatic that I had programmed myself to seek after. And that comparison made me doubt. He was better. For me. After that realization hit, I reeled at the thought of who I may have ended up with. Thank goodness I took that leap to find The One.
